Income Disparities across Chinese Provinces: Revisiting the Convergence-Divergence Debate
نویسندگان
چکیده
The literature on income disparities across China’s provinces suggests that there has been (absolute) divergence in per capita incomes since 1978, a trend which has accelerated since the early 1990s. We contribute to this literature by updating the convergence analyses to include the most recent period (1994-2003). Four methods (beta and sigma convergence, Markov chain and kernel density analyses) are used to ask whether provincial income disparities have increased or decreased since the mid 1990s. We find that the income disparity among the Chinese provinces has become wider between 1994 and 2003, which suggests stratification of income disparities. We also investigate the link between income disparities and export growth over the period 1994 – 2003 and find that export is an important determinant of provincial economic growth but contributes to the growing income disparity between coastal and inland provinces, given that there is little “trickle-down” effect from exportoriented (coastal) provinces to the poorer, interior provinces.

Measurement and analysis of the sources of provincial growth divergence in China (1981-2004)
The regional and provincial divergence in China’s economic growth has attracted extensive and intensive attention, yet the measurement and research on the sources of the divergence is relatively inadequate. Why there is divergence across provinces? What elements have contributed to the divergence and how? Based on growth regression analysis and “counterfactual econometrics”, this paper construc...
متن کاملThe Distribution Dynamics of Carbon Dioxide Emissions Intensity across Chinese Provinces: A Weighted Approach
This paper examines the distribution dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions intensity across 30 Chinese provinces using a weighted distribution dynamics approach. The results show that CO2 emissions intensity tends to diverge during the sample period of 1995–2014. However, convergence clubs are found in the ergodic distributions of the full sample and two sub-sample periods. Divergence, pol...

In this study, in order to assess and evaluate the role of the budget in the regional disparity of the country, the absolute beta and beta convergence of per capita income of the provinces of the country with the presence of allocation of government funds to the provinces variable's during the period from 1389 to 1393, with using panel spatial econometrics method. Based on the results, the slop...
متن کاملRegional Convergence in per Capita Personal Income in the US and Canada
This study examines regional convergence in per capita personal income in the US and Canada. We find that the disparity in real per capita income levels across US states (Canadian provinces) has declined, but income levels are not identical. Income levels become more aligned once costs of living are accounted for in relative per capita income series. US states (Canadian provinces) converge at a...
